Week 9 in Year 4G

Wow, hasn’t this term flown by! It’s been a very busy term in Year 4G with a lot of hard work involved. Today’s blog is to inform you of the amazing work the class has been producing!

Religion

This term we finished our unit that focused on Baptism and our consciences. We talked about what Baptism is, why people receive it and  how it is allows us to join God’s family and develop a relationship with God. We talked about how water is a special symbol to do with Baptism, and what it represents. One of the activities students enjoyed doing was designing a Piccollage on the Rite of Baptism. Here are a few samples.

We are now looking at Reconciliation and the topic of forgiveness as we prepare for Easter.

Literacy

In 4G, we break out Literacy lessons into three sessions: Reading,  Writing and Word Works.

In Reading, we have been working in groups on different comprehension strategies. One strategy we have been working on is ‘Making Connections’. We have been making text to text, text to self and text to world connections – when we make these connections it helps us to better understand a text.

In Word Works, we have got our routines sorted and are doing very well in class. The students have been doing amazingly in both their independent rotations and time with me – and their spelling scores reflect their high scores. Please make sure your child is doing the daily homework (found on the inside of their ‘Words Their Way’ book).

In Writing, students are just finishing their own traditional fairytale stories. It’s been great to see students attempting to include the structure, vocabulary and punctuation we have been working on in class. Below are some photos of students dissecting texts to look at the structure, vocabulary and punctuation used.

Numeracy

In Numeracy this term we have been looking at number facts and place value. We have just finished a unit on Odd and Even numbers to look at patterns when we add, subtract or multiply them. It was very interesting to see these patterns and the students can use it as a tool to check their answers.  We will be looking at Chance and Data for the rest of the term.

Homework

Parents, please make sure your children are doing their homework. Each night the students are to do at least 10 minutes reading, a spelling activity (In their Words Their Way book) and a set of questions in their Mental Maths books.

It’s also highly recommended students spend some time completing Mathletics tasks, which are updated weekly to reflect what we are doing in class.

February 21

Welcome to Year 4G!

This blog will be updated over the course of the year to keep you informed of all the important upcoming events, and to show you all of the amazing work that the class is completing.

The first few weeks of the year have been very busy, but a lot of fun, as the class gets to know each other. The students have been involved in a lot of activities to show me their interests, and I look forward to including these over the year in my teaching. The students have also been considering what they want to achieve over the year.

Last week we began our narrative unit by writing a story answering the question “Why was Goldilocks alone in the forest at the beginning of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears?” The students spent a session planning their stories, and sharing these ideas with their peers. The next day the students had 45 minutes to turn their ideas into a narrative. On the third day, the students were given time to edit their work and develop their words.

To make the writing session as productive as possible, the classroom was turned into a calming environment. The students were given special pencils to write with, candles were lit (Or LED candles were switched on!) and concentration music was played. In their self-reflections the students said they enjoyed the music and freedom to write what they wanted with some guidance. It was amazing to see the students so focused for such a large time. You can see the students being very productive in the video below.

Please check to make you are receiving notifications for the blog to see all of the exciting things that will take place this year!
